Evaluation of Ancillary Tasks
During the production of my ancillary task
I had to undertake research to find out the norms of a movie poster and the
format of a typical movie magazine. This gave myself the chance to see the
norms of these ancillary tasks and also the chance to challenge the norms of
these documents to help my movie stand out from other movies in this genre.
The magazine I have brand I have chosen to
use is Empire, who are one of the most recongised and reliable movie magazines,
which is the reason for my choice of magazine brand. When looking at the
magazine I looked at the typical structure of a empire magazine and see which
feature of this structure I should use to best advertise my movie. The features
I have chosen to use are the use of straplines and a flasher as these features
make the front cover stand out and unique. In many of the Empires magazine
front covers the main image will normally cover the Empire logo as it gives
more importance to the image than the brand. However, due to the image I have
chosen this type of format couldn't’t be used as the magazine wouldn’t have the same effet. This has led to my
main image not covering the Empire logo and located under the Empire logo with
the image have a effet on the reader of the magazine. Also i felt that its important
for to show off the Empire brand as this would be an important feature of
attracting readers to take notice of my film.
However, when
formatting my front cover i didn’t want to just follow the norms of a
coventional front cover as it wouldnt make my front cover look unique or stand
out to other magazine front covers. One of these features i have decided not to
follow is to use any large fonts or symbols
around the front cover because it would distract the the audience from
the main image and take more notice of straplines. This is also the case for
not choosing to use a secondary image as this is a bigger distraction for the
audience to take more interest in the seconadry image than the main image.
When creating my
magazine front cover i wanted to ensure that the colour scheme i used fitted
the genre and type of horror movie i am trying to promote. With my horror movie
being a gory type of horror i wanted to ensure that the colours used for the
front cover suits its purpose to further have a impact on my targetted
demographic. The colour scheme used on my front cover are black, yellow and red
as these are the conventional coloured associated with a gory horror movie.
These colours used in my magazine front cover has also been used when picking
costumes for my actresses in my trailer as it shows a house style and fits the
type of colours that the demographic would associated with a gory horror movie.
For my movie
poster i have decided to use one main image with the main character with the
background being the main setting for all the crimes to be accuring at. This is
following the norms of most movie poster as they would normally use is one main
image becuase by doing this it would not
distract the viewer from the main image. Another norm i have followed is to put
the credits on the bottom of the poster. This will normally contain the
production company. Editors, music and production names. This will be placed on
the bottom right hand side on the poster however, i didnt include many titles
because it would of made my poster look a little over crowded and have less of
an impact on the message of my poster.
